Day Sail on Kalmar Nyckel
The original Kalmar Nyckel was one of America’s pioneering colonial ships, a Mayflower of the Delaware Valley, yet her remarkable story has never been widely told.  The present-day Kalmar Nyckel serves as floating classroom and inspirational centerpiece for the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation’s award-winning educational programs, engaging students of all ages and stimulating them to learn more about Delaware’s rich maritime and colonial history.  Sail the Kalmar Nyckel!!  Onboard the Kalmar Nyckel, guests are invited to haul lines, set sails, and enjoy tales of the original Kalmar Nyckel.  Passengers are invited to experience a sailing adventure on the majestic ship with 8 sails and 8 miles of rigging.  The captain and crew stand ready to make the trip exciting for the whole family with either a day sail or on a special “pirate sail.”   Although the original Kalmar Nyckel was never a pirate vessel, serving instead as a trader, naval scout and colonial ship, today’s crew love playing the "pirate" part. Additionally, pitchers throw underhand, batters are called strikers, strikes are called when a striker does not attempt to swing the bat after a warning from the umpire, and foul balls can be caught on the bounce for an out.
